Through hands-on exercises and critical discussions, participants will explore current AI capabilities while maintaining creative vision and documentary values. This workshop provides a grounded, practical perspective that will help filmmakers and producers evaluate and integrate these technologies effectively in their own projects.

The workshop is led by Anna Giralt Gris and Jorge Caballero from Artefacto Films
Artefacto is a center for research, production, and innovation in film and technology, with a particular focus on artificial intelligence. Founded by Anna Giralt Gris and Jorge Caballero, filmmakers and researchers with extensive experience in the film and technology sectors, Artefacto is dedicated to providing innovative solutions and specialized training to enhance creativity and efficiency in the audiovisual industry.
Anna Giralt Gris is a filmmaker and researcher. She holds a degree in Audiovisual Communication and a Master’s in Communication Research from Pompeu Fabra University. Since 2017, she has been investigating the impact of artificial intelligence on the arts. She is the co-founder of Artefacto, a center for research, production, and innovation in film and technology, from which she leads the OpenDocs initiative in collaboration with Runway Studios. She co-directs the postgraduate program "Cinema, Algorithms, and AI" at Autonomous University of Barcelona and is an associate professor at Pompeu Fabra University. She has collaborated with institutions such as CCCB, Fundació Foto Colectania, MediaLab Prado, and Sónar+D, among others. Her films and new media projects have been selected and awarded at festivals such as IFFR, CPH:DOX, Visions du Réel, HotDocs, SXSW, IDFA, Málaga, and DocsBarcelona, among others.
Jorge Caballero is a filmmaker and researcher. He holds a PhD in Film and AI, is a telecommunications engineer, and has degrees in audiovisual communication and a Master’s in Interactive Media. As a lecturer at Pompeu Fabra University and Autonomous University of Barcelona, he leads training programs at the intersection of technology, cinema, and social impact. He is the co-founder of GusanoFilms and Artefacto, and his productions have been selected and awarded at international festivals such as HotDocs, SXSW, and DocNYC. Twice awarded Colombia’s National Documentary Prize, he has worked on projects with the United Nations and conducted research on cinema’s ability to induce pro-social behavioral changes. He co-directs the postgraduate program "Cinema, Algorithms, and AI" at Autonomous University of Barcelona, and in 2025, he will publish a book on artificial imagination.
Here you can find the various workshops and masterclasses they have conducted to date. They have also collaborated with the Catalan Film Academy’s screenplay residency, analyzing their scripts using AI. Over the past year, they have given masterclasses at major international events, including Marché du Film in Cannes, Sheffield Doc Fest, IFFR, and Sunny Side of the Doc, among many.
